Calla pintura al óleo y la belleza en la oscuridad

El arte encuentra su camino hacia todos y más aún cuando se trata de una persona que nació para crearlo. Éste es el caso de Calla Donofrio.
Calla es una artista formada en bellas artes, estudió en el Instituto Californiano de Artes, o CalArts. Su trabajo actual, y podría decirse su destino, es la pintura al óleo, aunque domina técnicas tan diversas como la acuarela, el acrílico, el collage, el dibujo, y el arte digital.
A través de ellas crea su obra y así nos muestra su visión sobre temas como la espiritualidad, belleza, oscuridad, subcultura, moda, música y más, que ha plasmado en diversos lienzos, portadas de álbumes y otros.
Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en todo USA y en varios países, en lugares como la Hive Gallery en Los Angeles, Gallery 1313 en Toronto, el Tate Modern en Londres, entre otros y sin duda su ascendencia japonesa e italo-americana es una fuente infinita de inspiración.
Sin más, te invito a conocerla más en esta primera de dos entregas de la entrevista con esta talentosísima artista.
Andrea: Te estuve espiando un poco en tu website. Me sentí una acosadora, te estoy observando.
Calla: Ok, es bueno saberlo.
Andrea: Debes saber lo que estás haciendo. Es horrible cuando alguien te entrevista y realmente no saben nada sobre ti.
Calla: Correcto.
Andrea: Entonces, de esa investigación me enteré de que comenzaste a pintar, o por lo menos supiste lo que querías hacer por siempre, a la edad de 5 o algo así. ¿Estoy en lo correcto?
Calla: Si, comencé a dibujar cuando era muy pequeña. No recuerdo exactamente, pero creo que mis padres lo supieron antes que yo. Entonces, desde que recuerdo, comencé a tomar clases de dibujo alrededor de los 6 o los 7 años, pero no probé la pintura al óleo hasta hace 2 años. Ha sido algo nuevo, pero sí dibujaba mucho en ese entonces y estuve haciendo collage de 2009 hasta 2013.
Andrea: Sí, recuerdo cuando te conocí: todo era sobre collage. No recuerdo exactamente cómo llegué hasta ti, pero fue como, «esto es genial». No sé si me equivoco, pero por entonces tu trabajo se relacionaba con la moda.
Calla: Si estaba usando muchos materiales de revistas de moda. Por ese tiempo estaba emocionada con lo que ahí sucedía. Mucho de ese trabajo de collage se propagó en internet porque estaba trabajando con músicos y pequeños sellos discográficos, entonces mucho de ello estaba enfocado en la música.
Andrea: Hablando de música, leí que has estado trabajando con proyectos de Witch House; y pensé que es increíble. No es algo que escuches todos los días, y ahora es una parte importante de la escena underground. Nunca vi a nadie tan preparado o trabajando profundamente en ello. ¿Cómo llegaste a ellos o cómo llegaron a ti?
Calla: No recuerdo exactamente cómo empezó. Creo que era amiga de gente como DJs y comencé a verlos postear cosas de Witch House. Era gótica cuando adolescente, entonces era muy emocionante. Pensé, «esto es como música electro comercial, pero con ese sentimiento gótico, nada que escuchara antes», y me di cuenta de que no había otros artistas visuales en ese momento. Entonces fue mi oportunidad de dar mi interpretación sobre cómo la música me hacía sentir, y la gente comenzó a postearlo en blogs y algunas de las imágenes se hicieron virales. Músicos de pequeños sellos discográficos se acercaron a mí preguntando si podían usar algo de mi trabajo para cassettes o portadas de CDs.
Andrea: Es bastante impresionante, ya sabes; casi siempre pasa en la escena underground que ves a la misma chica o la misma imagen en 100 flyers diferentes o incluso en portadas de álbumes, sólo lo toman de internet, sin nada de trabajo original o dando crédito.
Calla: Es verdad, ellos fueron amistosos y estaban interesados en involucrarme dándome crédito. Realmente lo aprecio porque la gente roba imágenes y no les importa. Uno de mis collages de Witch house ha sido usado en Inglaterra. Creo que hay un flyer para alguna banda llamada Echo, y no me avisaron. Alguien me envió la imagen y me dijo: «¿No es esto tuyo?»; o también esta compañía que ha usado algunos de mis collages en playeras en Inglaterra. Contacté a la tienda, pero no respondieron.
Andrea: Sí, ya sabes, con internet todo es posible y es tan malo como bueno. Algo que también es increíble es que tú te has autoenseñado muchas cosas, como, «¡ah, claro! Me enseñé a mi misma a pintar con óleos».
Calla: Como dije antes, tomé muchas clases de dibujo cuando era joven y realmente pienso que si estás tratando de hacer pinturas realistas o pinturas de gente dependerá realmente de tus habilidades de dibujo. Entonces tuve más tiempo para afilar esas habilidades, y en el colegio tomé un curso de introducción a la pintura con acrílico y aprendí lo básico de mezcla de colores. Aproximadamente hace 3 años comencé a enseñarme a mí misma acuarelas, porque ahora ya puedes aprender todo en internet: sólo ve a youtu y habrá toneladas de tutoriales, diferentes métodos, diferentes materiales, etc. Hice eso por un rato y, entonces, un día de la nada, decidí que quería pintar con óleos. Ha estado al final de mi lista de cosas por hacer por años, entonces pensé, «lo haré ahora», y al día siguiente compré los materiales y los probé. Estaba asombrada: esto es lo que quiero, lo que he estado buscando. Ojalá los hubiera probado antes cuando era más joven. He estado completamente obsesionada. Realmente amo la pintura al óleo.
Andrea: Sí, uno puede darse cuenta cuando te tomas una foto al lado de tu trabajo, luces como una mamá orgullosa, «mira a mi bebé».
Calla: Sí, bastante feliz. Dejé de hacer arte después del colegio porque necesitaba más dinero. Entonces obtuve un trabajo en gráficos, haciendo comerciales, y realmente consume tu tiempo y es exhaustivo. Pensaba que no podría hacer arte jamás, y ahora que tengo más tiempo para concentrarme. Me siento como una niña de nuevo. Me siento feliz de continuar pintando. Por supuesto que a veces tengo momentos difíciles, pero, cuando estoy en el estudio, siento que puedo dejar eso a un lado y respirar.
Andrea: Algo en lo que he pensado últimamente es que a veces pensamos que el mundo del arte es relajado y todo fluye, pero requiere mucha disciplina, y queda demostrado al enseñarte a ti misma (acuarelas y óleos). Quiero decir, todo está en internet, pero ¿cómo logras seleccionar tu información y concentrarte?
Calla: Hay muchas distracciones, pero trato de sobrellevarlas haciendo un plan, porque ves a la gente haciéndolo en diferentes formas. Puede ser abrumador, entonces trato de ver cuál artista me gusta más y cómo lo hace. Entonces hago mis propias pruebas y esto lo hace más fácil para mí Si luce raro, lo hago hasta que me acostumbro. Sobre todo, creo que toma muchas horas hacerlo y saber qué materiales funcionan para mí.
Andrea: Cierto, hasta que practiques no sabrás y entenderás que no todo es exactamente como lo dicen las reglas.
Calla: De cierta forma me siento agradecida de no aprenderlo en la escuela, sino por mi propia cuenta, porque siempre está la voz de tu maestro en tu cabeza, y ellos tienen su propia forma de hacer las cosas, que en su mayoría está basada en la forma en la que lo hacían sus maestros. Fue difícil porque estaba en mi empleo y secretamente veía videos de youtu, tratando de diseñar al mismo tiempo. Lo que aprendí es que mucho del estrés y dudas en la pintura vienen del tiempo que pasas pensando y no pintando. Si descanso una semana de una pintura, me siento estresada y comienzo a pensar si sé lo que estoy haciendo o qué haré después; pero cuando estás ahí, trabajando los materiales, es totalmente diferente. Es más una experiencia física que racional.
Andrea: A veces nos asustan las críticas sobre nuestro trabajo y al mismo tiempo no queremos volvernos mejores en ello.
Calla: Sí, no tiene que ser tan personal. Conozco a muchos artistas que temen mostrar su trabajo, pero ¿qué es lo peor que puede pasar?, ¿qué la gente se ría?

Calla, oil painting and beauty in darkness.
INTRO
Art finds its way to everyone, even more when it comes to a person who was born to create it. This is Calla Donofrio’s case.
Calla is an artist educated in fine arts, she studied in CalArts. Her current work and we could say destiny is the oil painting, eve though she masters diverse techniques such as watercolors, acrylics, collage, drawing and digital art.
Through them she creates her work and with it she shows us her vision about topics like spirituality, beauty, darkness, subculture, fashion, music and more, that has been embodied in sundy canvases, album covers and others.
Her work has been exhibited all over the USA and worldwide, in places like the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles, Gallery 1313 in Toronto, the Tate Modern in Londres, etc. No doubt her japanese and italo- american is an infinite source of inspiration.
Without further ado, i invite you to know her in this first delivery of two, of the interview to this talented artist.
Andrea: I was stalking you a little bit on your website, I felt you know like a stalker, I am watching you.
Calla: Ok good to know

Andrea: You got to know what you are doing, it is horrible when someone interviews you and they do not know anything about you
Calla: Right
Andrea: So from that investigation I got to know that you started painting or at least knowing what you wanted to do forever at the age of 5 or something like that. Am i right?
Calla: Yeah, i started drawing when i was very little and i do not remember when i started but i think my parents knew before me. So as long as i can remember i started taking drawing classes about 6 or 7 seven but i did not try oil paints until 2 years ago. That´s been a new thing, but yeah i drew a lot then and i was doing collage around 2009 till 2013.
Andrea: Yeah i remember when i knew you that it was everything about collage, i don’t remember exactly how i got to you, but i was like this is pretty great. I don’t know if i am wrong but by that time i remember your work had to do with fashion.
Calla: Yeah i was using a lot of materials from fashion magazines, at that time i was excited with things happening there. But a lot of that collage work was spread around the internet cause i was working with musicians and small label records, a lot of it i think was focused on music.
Andrea: Talking about music, i read you have been working with Witch house projects. And i thought wow, it is amazing, something you do not hear everyday. And now it is a very important part of the underground scene. I never saw someone so trained or so deeply working on it. How did you reach them or how did they reach you?
Calla: I don’t remember exactly how it started. I think I was friends with people like djs and I started to see them posting this Witch house music. I was a goth when i was a teenager so it was really exciting, i thought this is kind of mainstream electro sound but with this goth feel like something unlike anything i heard and i noticed there weren’t other visual artists at the time, so it was kind of my chance to give my interpretation of how the music made me feel and then people started to posted on blogs and some of the images went a little viral and some musicians and small record labels reached out to me asking if they could use some of the artwork for cassette tapes or cd covers.
Andrea: That is pretty amazing cause you know mostly on the underground scene happens that you see the same girl or image in 100 different flyers or even in album covers, just taken from the internet, with actually no original work or giving credits.
Calla: It is true, they were friendly and interested in getting me involved with giving me credit. I really appreciated that cause people do steal images a lot and not really care. One of my Witch House collages has been used in England. I think there is a flyer for the Echo some band playing, they did not tell me. Someone texted me an image like isn’t this yours? or there is this company that has used some of my collages on t-shirts in England . I reached out to the shop and they did nor respond.
Andrea: Yeah you know with the internet everything is possible and it is good as bad. Also something I found amazing is that you have self taught you to do a lot of things. Like oh yes i just self taught me oil painting .
Calla: Oh like i said i took a lot of drawing classes when i was young. I really think if you are trying to do realistic painting or paintings of people, it is going to rely on your drawing skills. So I had a lot of time to sharpen those skills and then in college I took one course on intro to acrylic paints and learn the basics of color mixing. Then about 3 years ago i started teaching myself watercolors paints, cause you can learn anything on the internet now, just go on youtu and there are going to be tons of tutorials, different methods, different materials, etc. I did that for a while and then one day out of the blue decided oh i want to try oil paints, it’s been at the bottom of my to do list, maybe i´ll do it now and the next day i bought the supplies and tried them. I was amazed, this is what I have been looking for. I wish I had tried them when I was younger, I have been completely obsessed, I really love oil paint.
Andrea: Yeah you can tell first when you take a photo by the side of your work. you look like a proud mama, look at my baby.
Calla: Yes, very happy. I stopped doing art after college because I needed more money. So I got a job in graphics, doing stuff for commercials and it is very time consuming and exhausting. I was like i can’t not do art anymore. And now i have more time to focus, i feel like a kid again.i feel so happy to be able to pursue painting.
Of course i have hard times sometimes but when i am in the studio i feel like i can pull that aside, and take a break.
Andrea: Something i have been thinking lately sometimes we think the art world is just relaxed and everything just flows. But it requires a lot of discipline and it shows when you self taught you. I mean everything is there on the internet, but how do you do to select your info, and get focused?
Calla: There are a lot of distractions but i try to handle the problems by making a plan, because you see people doing it in different ways and it can be overwhelming so i try to see which artist i like the most and how they do it. So i do my own tests and this makes it easier for me, like this looks weird, until i just get used to it. I think overall it just takes a lot of hours doing it and getting a sense for what materials work for me.
Andrea: That makes sense, until you get to practice you won’t know or understand that everything is not exactly as the rules say.
Calla: In that way I am kind grateful that i did not learn in school but on my own, because there is always the voice of your teacher on the back of your head, and they have their own way to do things which is largely based on how their teacher did it. It was difficult because i was working my job and secretly watching youtu videos, trying to do my design. What I learn is that a lot of the stress and self doubts in painting comes from time you spend not painting and thinking.
If i take a week off from a painting i feel stressed and i start to think i do now know what i am doing or what i am going to dfo next. But when you are there and working materials, is totally different. It is more of a physical experience than a racional one.
Andrea: Now, i think sometimes we get scared of criticism about our work but at the same time we don’t want to get better at it.
Calla: Yeah it does not have to be so personal, i know a lot of artists that are afraid to show their work but i mean, what is the worst that can happen? People will laugh?
